...Where Everybody Knows Your Name...

To begin... I Love T.V.

I mean it.  If I listed activities in order by the amount of time I spend on them, it would be sleeping, work, watching T.V., and then everything else.  And when I'm sleeping, I tend to have a lot of dreams about the T.V. shows I watch.

I can quote lines from episodes and movies that I've only seen once or twice.  I get completely wrapped up in the imaginary lives of the characters.  I get more nostalgic thinking about shows from my childhood, than I do about my actual childhood.

So, there it is... I Love T.V.

I know this might be a weird thing to proclaim, but I've been thinking about it a lot lately.  Why?  Why do I Love T.V. so much?

To answer that I'm going to quote a T.V. Show:

"But most importantly, when I didn't have any friends, it made me feel like maybe I did"
~Fry, Futurama-Where No Fan Has Gone Before

Of course T.V. life isn't real, but I think what fascinates me so much is the kind of friendships and connections the characters make with one another.  I want friends that are ready and willing to have wacky adventures with me, and older I get, the harder it gets to make new friends, at least in real life.

I saw a video about a week ago that had something to say on the subject.  You can view it Here.  Skip to minute 7 of the video where he is discussing the impact of the internet on friendships.  I have to say I especially agree with the fact that we use social media more as a way to showcase our lives, rather than using it to connect on a significant level with others.

Even when we are using the internet as a way to connect, we tend to seek out groups of people that are like ourselves.  We seek approval and reinforcement of our ideas, rather than welcoming different views and the kind of intense discussions that can be had when we are explaining and defending our viewpoints.

I know I'm guilty of it.  I rarely post anything to my facebook page because my views and beliefs differ greatly from that of most of my friends and especially my family.

So, I suppose I love T.V. so much because I wish life was more like a good T.V. show.

"It was just a matter of knowing the secret of all TV shows: At the end of the episode, everything's always right back to normal"
~Fry, Futurama-When Aliens Attack
